Click on "comments" following this message to say something nice about anything Mendon. If you wish to complain about something then by all means go to any or all of the other Mendon Blogs. Here we show our appreciation to the "unsung hero", our thanks to the police officer that served you well, the fire fighter or rescue person that helped you, the town employee, appointee, or volunteer that went the extra mile or maybe just another Mendon resident that did something nice. If you can't think of anything then get out there and do something to inspire someone else to comment. Make a positive difference!

Hooray for the Post Office employees who were always kind, helpful, patient, funny, and friendly.
And to Fred especially.....it seems strange to never have to go to the post office anymore and to not have you always take the last cent in my pocket...but boy oh boy I miss you!!!!

I would like to thank Rebecca's for allowing our 2nd cribbage tournament to be held there last night. Congratulations to Arthur Rondeau for taking the first place prize yet again. It has become a mission to beat him. Cathy Craig,Aa Mendon Area Real Estate agent started this tournament last month and it has turned out to be great fun. The seniors that ended up dominating the group are great to play games with. They are sharp, quick and I challenge any of you "young" folk out there to beat them. I will even slip an extra 10 bucks prize money to anyone that knocks Arthur out of first. Thanks to everyone that attended and particularly Olga,it just wouldn't be the same without you telling me how to run things! I can't wait to be old and bossy and want things done my way all the time. What's that dear? I already am?!

The Town Hall and its workers is often where the first impression of a town is formed by a prospective homeowner. I remember when I bought my first house in North Smithfield RI the Town clerk was quite rude and from that day I couldn't wait to get out. I am glad to be able to say that I have always witnessed our Town Hall workers being helpful and courteous to the public. Keep up the good work!

I, for one, am thankful that I live in Mendon especially when I drive by Hopedale's row houses on Rte. 16 that are about 15 feet apart or the mega stores in Milford and Bellingham. I am thankful for our open spaces and would like to express my gratitude to Ann Mazar and everyone else on any and all committees who help us keep it that way as much as possible.

The people that make open space possible in Mendon do deserve our everlasting gratitude. I am often in awe of the extraordinary view I am treated to as I pass by Varneys pasture on Providence Rd. When the full moon hangs over the rising mist it demands that you take a moment and be thankful to Dick Varney for making sure it was left open and to Linda Varney for preserving the farm as a farm. These are the jewels that crown Mendon. The Vincents on Main St., the Vandersluis' on North Ave,the Hawkes on Pleasant St.,the Pearsons on Quissett Rd. the Gannetts many contributions, all these people have sacrificed their time and money to keep Mendon beautiful. When you see any of these people, thank them and then thank them again.

One of the great many things to love about Mendon is it's proximity to Boston, Worcester and Providence. Last night my wife Lynn and I joined some friends and went to the "Water Fire" in down town Providence. It was without a doubt the most impressive, unique public experience I have ever had. imagine thousands of people watching 100 large metal baskets
of fire "floating" in water with primevil awe, gregorian chants resonating in the canal, a man on the bow of a gondola twirling fire balls at either end of a chain. I have heard about it before but no one did it justice. I haven't either. See it for yourself, it's a great date, family night out, or evening with friends. Its all free but if you want a special treat call ahead and reserve a boat ride.

I too am grateful for the lovely vista of Varney's pasture on Providence Road with its increasingly rare view of peacfully grazing cows. I say a silent prayer of gratitude to Dick and Linda everytime I pass by. We do owe these people and others like them a debt of sincere gratitude.

How about Lake Nipmuc? We are so fortunate to have this 90 acre jewel in our town. Most of our children have learned to swim in this lake. On hot days, we enjoy its cooling breezes. It is a real treasure.

Lake Nipmuc is indeed one of our "Jewels" if not the crowning one. In the days before air conditioning Lake Nipmuc was THE place to go for many people in the area and beyond for recreation, entertainment and that cool breeze. Lakeview park and Whites beach were great places to go when I was a kid in the sixties. I would rush thru my chores (and there were ALWAYS chores) so that I could spend the day at Whites. It is a great place and I don't remember a time when it wasn't run by great people. Thanks to Al and Suzanne Byrne, Jackie LaCoy and Mrs.Drew, all lived in the house and ran the beach during different summers. It made it a very safe place for young boy to be.

I would like to take a moment to thank all the people who support the Mendon Fire Department and the Mendon Police Department. We appreciate your support and try our best everyday to serve the people of this great town.

I would also like to take a moment to thank all of the dedicated people who volunteer to be on Committees, Boards, and Councils in our town. These people give up there family time to help make Mendon a better town for all of us.

Thanks to our great schools and dedicated teachers, especially Dick Grady who has played such an important role in helping our children know and understand the historical past of our town.

Many thanks go out to Jane Coleman who taught me a lot of old Mendon when she was alive.

Jane Coleman was very much the Mendon Historian. My earliest memories of her are thru the eyes of a second grader at the Center School. It was nearing the end of the school year and all of us in Mrs. Hutchinsons class had listened to Miss Coleman screaming at her third grade class in the adjoining room for the entire year. We looked forward to the upcoming school year with absolute dread. Now in all fairness to Miss Coleman the third graders that year were some of the most infamous behavioral challenges any teacher ever faced. Names like Alfred Winn,Loring Eiland, Ernie Miller,Stanley Chapin all in one class would drive any teacher to question their vocation choice. Miss Coleman did just that and never taught again. We were thrilled to walk into class that September and be welcomed by a shiny new young lady teacher. Her name was?......

I would like to recognize AJ Byrne for his efforts in renovating and improving our Town Beach -

The one-time jewel of the town, White's Beach was the place to go years ago - the water and beach were pristine and AJ is leading the effort to return our beloved park to what it once was...GREAT JOB AJ!!!

Hats off to the Taft Library's summer reading program which provided services to 303 children this summer. 196 of the kids in the program won a Barnes & Noble gift certificate for reading 10 books through this program. Great job Jennifer - Children's Librian.

I am thankful and very lucky to live in a town where people actually care what goes on and, if they don't like it, they get involved to effect change. This is what will keep our town a great place to raise a family.
